Terrace Level Powder Room
Shawn Alshut Shawn C. Alshut grew up in New England, the daughter of an award winning watercolor artist whose passion for architecture and interior design created a foundation upon which Shawn has built her own career. Her Yankee respect for the environment began when the host of a children's television show showed her how to conserve water while brushing her teeth. Turning off the lights and turning down the thermostat, and years of recycling in the form of garage sales and antiquing soon followed. As an award-winning registered Architect, NCIDQ certified Interior Designer and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Accredited Professional, Shawn has been able to broadly expand her conservation efforts. She has worked with numerous clients to achieve LEED Certifications on corporate offices, academic, government and commercial buildings and spread the word on sustainable best practices. Shawn's design background started at the Rhode Island School of Design, where she majored in illustration and photography. With her combined interests in history and architecture, she earned a degree in Historic Preservation at Roger Williams College. Eventually Shawn attended the University of Texas, where she received her Master's of Architecture Degree. She practiced in Houston and Boston before moving to Atlanta in 1995 where she became an Associate Principal in an internationally recognized architecture and interiors firm. She is currently the founding Principal of studio A2 architecture + interiors, specializing in refined residential and corporate design.
Who says "Green" can't be refined and luxurious? The Terrace Level Powder Room shows that sustainable design can be both. After all, what is more sustainable than design that withstands the test of time? Using a combination of locally made materials, low and no VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) finishes, water saving fixtures, high efficiency lighting, antiques, and local artwork, this room's palette of earthy metallic finishes creates a well-appointed retreat. Lustrous Koroseal vinyl wallcovering, "Burnished", recreates the exquisite craftsmanship and fine patina of hammered metal. And this is not just surface beauty. This wallcovering has passed rigorous emissions tests and has been certified by the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute as low emitting with a minimal impact on indoor air quality. This results in less indoor air pollution and a reduction in odor and potential irritation problems for the occupants. And when it is finally time to redecorate...strip this wallcovering off the wall and Koroseal will recycle it for you! The Terrace Level Powder Room is warmly illuminated by brushed nickel and etched glass light fixtures with LED lamping. Water is stylishly conserved with the sculptural dual flush toilet and the lavatory faucet with low - flow aerator. Even the rich natural quartz countertop is GREENGUARD certified. The decorative mirror is a recycled family antique. The architectural photography is by celebrated local photographer, Brian Gassel.
