Joycelyn Hairston shares a desire to make environmentally conscious decisions every day.  She makes an effort to live a balanced eco-conscious lifestyle and play a role in protecting our environment.  She strives to use and add earth friendly products and practices when creating her art.

Joycelyn sources eco-friendly materials and processes in a comprehensive and ongoing effort to minimize environmental impacts.  She seeks safer and healthier alternatives.  She rummages for low-toxic and non-toxic fine art supply lines.  It is important to Joycelyn to use fine art supplies from U. S. manufacturers who maintain eco-conscious manufacturing procedures to produce sustainably and responsibly.

For her, a "Reclaimed Reception" is a great event!  Joycelyn believes that there is so much that can be fashioned, be done, be made and be transformed from existing, mundane, commonly used objects.  Just look around and have fun!

Following are some ways that Joycelyn incorporates green products into her art routine and production:
  • Uses easels and print racks made of renewable hardwood which is a smart, environmental choice.
  • Uses pencils that are made with Forest Stewardship Council certified wood which assures that they come from forests that are managed to meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations.
  • Uses green paints which have no volatile organic compounds.  This means there are not toxic off-gassing from the paint.
  • Uses eco friendly papers including papers that are acid free or Forest Stewardship Council certified, and even 100% recycled (post consumer office paper) pulp.
  • Stores and often displays her works in ecologically friendly portfolios.
  • Chooses framing materials made of verified sustainable solid hardwood mouldings and  recycled wood that has earned Environmentally Preferred Product (EPP) Certification.
  • Uses framing materials made with environmentally safe finishes manufactured in the USA.  green
  • Uses green matboard that is manufactured from 100% renewable cotton or made with recycled fiber.
  • Uses corn-based biodegradable green glue. Uses backing board from recycled materials.
  • Joycelyn's packaging (when she even chooses to use some) is often recyclable.
  • Sometimes makes frames from materials and supplies that she has available on hand. Reuses and recycles frames as much as possible.
  • Uses shipping boxes that are saved from the box crusher at her local stores.
  • Uses shredded newspaper and junk mail for shipment stuffing material.
  • Uses low-toxicity and non-toxic solvents, soaps and brush cleaners.
  • Uses general purpose thinner and mild solvents that are a combination of highly purified cosmetics-grade hydrocarbons and food-grade essential oils.
  • Uses odorless thinner, brush cleaner and volatile painting medium for oil-based paints.
