Symphony is a specially engineered composite shingle that very closely resembles natural slate but is much lighter and so is much easier and less expensive to install.  It goes on solid and stays shatter resistant unlike slate that can break when walked upon or when installed in cold weather.   Its excellent weathering capabilities ensure durability beyond other alternatives and its UV fade resistant surface technology provides superior color stability.  Offered in various color blends, Symphony is pre-mixed at our factory to reduce complexity and time to install.  In short, Symphony looks like natural slate but performs better and installs at a fraction of the cost.  And with CertainTeed’s 50-year limited warranty, customers are assured their roof will perform for generations to come.

What influenced your company to go green?

In many ways, CertainTeed has always been Green. Our tag line of "Quality Made Certain, Satisfaction Guaranteed", and our manufacturing focus on Health, Safety & Environment have kept us anchored in Green values, because quality as it relates to health & the environment is Green.  None the less, we have increased  our focus in this area along with the heightened awareness of communities across the country.  These are communities that we belong to, through our employees & customers, and we strive to team up with them to raise the bar on Green Building so that we can help build a more sustainable future for us all.

What has your company done to go green?

As I mentioned before, we feel like we have always been Green.  This was apparent when we did a company wide review two years ago, but even since then we have been continually striving to improve ourselves.  Since that review, we have had numerous initiatives aross the company that extend from Sourcing, to Manufacturing & Distribution, Facilities, and New Product Development.  These initiatives have led us to improve our energy efficiency & overall resource utilization as well as reduce our waste and it's impact on the environment.  In addition, we have found ways to learn from & contribute to the communities that we belong to, and in the process we have saved ourselves and our customers money.  At CertainTeed, we feel that Green is not only good business, it is a way of life and part of our value system.

What are the environmental benefits?

Symphony is made at Certainteed's roofing plant in Oxford, NC, so qualifies for regional LEED credits since it is made within 500 miles of the Atlanta metro area.  Tiles are made using infrared reflective (IR) pigments that are designed to maximize the durability of the tile and reduce cooling costs and energy.  With a 50 year limited warranty, Symphony already is one of the most durable roofing products available on the market today.  Plus, it is lightweight so requires less fuel to transport.  Finally, the manufacturing process produces no waste.  One hundred percent of the material used either becomes finished product or is recycled back into the process.
